Two people died this week in accidents caused by garbage trucks. Today in Los Angeles, California, a garbage truck was backing up in the Beverly Grove area when it struck a female pedestrian crossing the street. The fatal crash was reported at around 8:30 a.m. on the 8900 block of West Third Street.
Emergency crews responded to the call and pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Investigators are still piecing together whether or not the woman was in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. The victim has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.
Police cordoned off the street in order to conduct their investigation. According to KTLA, the truck belongs to the Department of Public Works, who released a statement saying their thoughts are with those affected by Thursday morning’s accident and that a full investigation is ongoing.
Another accident involving a garbage truck and a school bus left a 53-year-old man dead. The fatal crash happened on Monday at around 3:00 p.m. in Union County, North Carolina.
Authorities say garbage truck driver Joshua David Teague rounded a curve in the road and drifted into oncoming traffic, where his truck collided head-on with the school bus, killing 53-year-old driver Timothy McManus. According to WCNC, McManus had just dropped off the last of his students and was on his way to another school when the accident happened. Teague was taken to a local hospital in the aftermath of the wreck with injuries not considered life-threatening. The North Carolina Highway Patrol cited him for death by motor vehicle, and charges are pending the outcome of an investigation.
Local residents say a street light or warning signs on New Town Road might be needed in order to prevent crashes like this one from happening again.
