Chattanooga, Tennessee
The truck driver who plowed into a line of cars on a Tennessee highway is wanted in his former home state of Wisconsin. The June 25 crash, involved eight other vehicles, left six people dead and others with injuries.
Authorities said traffic on Interstate 75 had slowed due to construction. Truck driver Benjamin Scott Brewer failed to slow his truck and slammed into the line of vehicles. One of the passenger vehicles burst into flames, killing four people helplessly trapped inside. Two of the victims in the burning car were children. Two other men in separate vehicles were also killed.
Sources say Brewer was involved in an accident in Florida just one day prior to the Tennessee accident. He was cited for reckless driving in the crash that caused $6,000 worth of damage. No injuries were reported.
According to WRCBTV, Brewer is wanted in Rock County, Wisconsin for failing to appear on a scheduled court date after he was arrested in 2013 on a drug charge. The 39-year-old was charged with possession of an illegally obtained prescription after he and an associate allegedly tried to get local pharmacies to fill out of state prescriptions.
A police report indicated that Brewer was allegedly attempting to fill prescriptions for 126 Oxycodone and 56 Ibuprofen pills. His associate was allegedly attempting to fill prescriptions for Oxycodone and Zanaflex.
In the wake of the June 25 crash, Chattanooga Police Lt. David Gibb said Brewer “appeared to be not quite right” when he was interviewed, though he wouldn’t elaborate any further, pending the results of Brewer’s blood work.
At this time, Brewer hasn’t been charged in the June 25 accident, though that could soon change.
